Frequently Asked Questions

?

Q: What is a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)?

The vehicle identification number (VIN) refers to a unique code that is given to each automobile. The VIN acts as the vehicle’s fingerprint, as no two vehicles have the same number. A VIN is composed of 17 characters (digits and capital letters) that act as a unique identifier for the vehicle. Each character is used to reference the vehicle’s unique features, specifications, and manufacturer. VIN numbers can be used to track recalls, registrations, warranty claims, thefts, and insurance coverage. In our case, the VIN is used to identify the correct module for a particular vehicle.

?

Q: What does “Plug & Play” mean?

Plug & Play or Plug N Drive refers to all control modules that don’t require additional programming. Most units before 1996 (OBD I) are referred to as plug-n-play. All of our Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth & Jeep units are sold as Plug & Play.

?

Q: What does “Programmed & Updated” mean?

This term refers to the programming process our mechanics perform on all specified control modules. During this process, the vehicle’s replacement engine control module is VIN Programmed and flashed with the most recent manufacturer updates. These updates can help improve the performance and fuel economy of the vehicle.

?

Q: How much is shipping?

Flagship One offers free shipping throughout the USA. There is a 1-3 day handling time after an order is placed. We use USPS Priority shipping to deliver all of our modules. This usually takes 1-3 business days on average, and most of our modules are delivered to the customer in less than 5 business days. In some cases, we can expedite the shipping and will inform you if that is a possibility.

?

Q: Where can I locate my VIN?

You can find the VIN (17 digit identification number) engraved at the bottom corner of the driver’s side windshield or inside the driver’s door. It can also be found on the title, registration, or insurance card of the vehicle.

?

Q: What does an Engine Computer do?

The Engine Computer (ECM) will adapt to your own driving patterns and it can also monitor and regulate all the essential functions in a vehicle as conditions change. The engine computer is also responsible for making sure that all the modules are communicating smoothly and seamlessly.

?

Q: Can I replace an ECM myself?

The engine control module is easy to replace and relatively simple for you to do it on your own. Nevertheless, an ECM can be costly, so you need to make sure you have the right part number plus the required software updates to ensure a smooth transition.

?

Q: What causes an ECU to fail?

The engine control module is prone to both external and internal threats that can cause it to not work as expected. Below is a list of the most common ones:

  • Constant engine vibrations
  • An unexpected short circuit
  • Excessive Temperature
  • Natural Threats such as corrosion
  • Irregular voltage
?

Q: What are the signs of a bad car computer?

Since the engine computer controls a lot of the major functions in a car, it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what is causing your engine control module to malfunction. However, there are some common signs that can help you diagnose a faulty powertrain control module such as:

  • Engine stalling and misfiring
  • Loss of ignition pulse
  • Check engine warning light
  • Loss of acceleration
  • Car failing to start
