How Long Does It Take to Replace a PCM, ECU, or Engine Computer? - Protech Auto Systems

On average, replacing a PCM, ECU, or ECM takes between 1 and 3 hours.

The physical replacement typically requires 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. This includes disconnecting the battery, removing mounting bolts, unplugging wiring harness connectors, installing the replacement module, and reconnecting the battery.

Programming and relearn procedures can add an additional 30 minutes to 2 hours. Most modern vehicles require VIN programming, immobilizer pairing, key relearn procedures, crankshaft variation relearn, and sometimes transmission adaptation reset.

If the replacement module is pre-programmed to the vehicle’s VIN, installation is significantly faster. If dealership-level programming is required, total time increases.

Factors that extend installation time include difficult module locations (under intake manifold or dashboard), immobilizer synchronization, corroded connectors, or European vehicles requiring online coding access.

In most cases, PCM replacement is a same-day repair when properly diagnosed and prepared.
